Peoria teen found guilty of murder in 2023 shooting of another teen

A Peoria County jury on Wednesday found Byron A. Jarvis guilty of first-degree murder in an August 2023 fatal shooting of a 17-year-old in the East Bluff neighborhood.

Jarvis, who was 14 at the time of the incident, was tried as an adult in the daytime killing of Dahvie Brown-Bey. The jury took just over an hour to render its verdict.

The shooting occurred near the intersection of Kansas Street and Wisconsin Avenue in front of several bystanders. Brown-Bey suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Evidence and testimony presented during the three-day trial included surveillance video that captured the shooting from across the street.

The video showed a group of kids gathered on the sidewalk, when an individual approached them on a scooter, pulled a gun from his waistband, and fired close-range shots at Brown-Bey.

Jarvis has a sentencing hearing scheduled for March 12.
