A 25-year-old Decatur man has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2023 fatal shooting at the Casey’s gas station on Farmington Road in West Peoria.

In May 2025, a Peoria County jury found Lamentae R. Turner guilty of first-degree murder and a weapons charge in connection with the death of Stashaun Wheeler, 35, also of Decatur.

Circuit Judge Stephen Kouri handed Turner the life term during Friday’s sentencing hearing. The hearing had been delayed more than a year as the defense was granted multiple continuances.

According to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, Wheeler was shot at least 10 times on Jan. 22, 2023.

Deputies with the Peoria County Sheriff's Office responded to the gas station around 4 a.m. and found Wheeler in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Surveillance video showed both Wheeler and Turner had been at a Peoria nightclub prior to the shooting. Evidence showed Turner followed Wheeler as he left the club and went to the gas station.

Video footage from the Casey’s showed Wheeler walking from the store to his car when prosecutors said Turner and another man ran up to him and began shooting before fleeing on foot.
