Peoria police make arrest in Center Bluff fatal shooting

A Peoria man is due in court Monday for a detention hearing, after being arrested and charged with murder.

Amorta I. Nelson, 25, was charged this weekend with murder in the shooting death of Antonio Hardy on Sept. 18. Authorities say Nelson shot Hardy, 33, while Hardy was getting gas near the intersection of Sheridan and McClure.

Peoria County prosecutors say surveillance video shows Nelson getting out of a vehicle and shooting Hardy multiple times. They say Nelson admitted being at the gas station but denied being the shooter.

Hardy was found after police responded to a nine-round ShotSpotter alert around 8:20 p.m. that night. Hardy was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in critical condition, and died in the operating room just over two hours later, said authorities.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. Nelson is being held at the Peoria County jail.
