Data on COVID-19 in the Tri-County continue to offer mixed results, with a continued surge in vaccinations overshadowed by an ongoing spike in cases.
Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) figures updated Friday show the region adding more than 4,000 vaccine doses for a second straight day, putting Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties collectively on the brink of topping 200,000 injections.
Meanwhile, Tri-County health officials reported 339 new COVID-19 cases since Thursday, along with a 186 more people isolating at home. Active cases in the area climbed to 2,305, with 39 of the 124 coronavirus patients at Peoria-area hospitals in intensive care units.
As of Tuesday, the rolling seven-day test positivity rates were in double digits for both Peoria (12.1%) and Tazewell (10.8%) counties. All three counties in the region have COVID-19 warning designations from IDPH, along with McLean and Stark counties.
A fourth straight day with no new fatalities reported kept the region’s death toll since the start of the pandemic at 602, while the case count rose to 39,448 – including just two shy of 20,000 total infections in Peoria County alone.
The latest vaccination statistics show the Tri-County with 199,736 shots recorded, an increase of 4,466 in the past day and more than 16,800 in one week. The region is now up to 83,105 fully vaccinated residents, or about 23.7% of the population.
Statewide, 20.9% percent of adults are fully dosed, with Illinois totaling 6.87 million shots in arms. However, the IDPH reported 4,004 new COVID-19 infections and 21 more fatalities since Thursday. The state’s case count since last March now stands at 1,273,200 with a death toll of 21,476.
