Thirty-year-old chairs in the James Carius Community Room at the Tazewell County Justice Center will soon be replaced.

The county board, which meets monthly in the room, approved spending more than $30,400 for 91 new chairs. The price includes delivery and assembly, and a 12-year warranty that covers parts and labor.

The chairs are part of an upcoming $420,000 renovation of the room, which opened in 2003 and was named in 2013 for Carius, a 38-year board member.

"This is the board's most public space, so it's important that it looks good," said Max Schneider, chair of the board's property committee, which recommended the purchase.

Some of the old chairs will be used in county offices. Officials from the Veterans Assistance Commission have expressed an interest.

Widmer Interiors will supply the new chairs, deliver and assemble them, and dispose of the old chairs that aren't wanted.

The Peoria company will supply chairs for the Justice Center Annex that's under construction. The county has a cooperative bid for furniture purchases through Widmer.
