Tri-County COVID Hospitalizations Reach 2-Month High

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Peoria-area hospitals are currently treating the most patients admitted for COVID-19 in more than two months, while the Tri-County area saw an increase of more than 4,100 vaccine doses administered in the past day.

Public health officials on Wednesday reported 70 individuals hospitalized with coronavirus infections, including 12 in intensive care units. That marks an increase of 10 from the day before, and the highest number since 72 on Jan. 25.

Officials say the death of a Tazewell County man in his 90s is the region’s latest fatality linked to the pandemic. The Tri-County death toll over the past year is up to 597, while the COVID-19 case count climbed to 37,213 following an addition of 199 infections since Tuesday.

Updated vaccination figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health show Peoria, Tazewell and Woodford counties added 4,121 shots in the last day, well above the area’s daily average of 2,460 over the past week.

The region is up to 178,537 total doses administered, with 72,385 residents fully vaccinated – or 20.6% of the population. The three counties added 2,720 fully dosed individuals since Tuesday, including 1,546 in Peoria County alone.

Illinois as a whole moved to 5.8 million total injections and 2.16 million fully vaccinated residents, which is just below 17% of the population.

The IDPH reported 2,592 new COVID-19 cases and 28 more deaths in the past day, with 1,413 people hospitalized across the state. Since the start of the pandemic, Illinois has logged 1,244,585 coronavirus infections and 21,301 fatalities.
