The second suspect in last month’s early morning shooting and fleeing incident on the South Side that left two men dead has been released from the hospital and charged with first-degree murder.
Peoria Police said Dorrean Ellis, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday after an interview at the hospital. He is being held at the Peoria County Jail.
Ellis and Karon Hopkins, 20, allegedly pulled up to a crowd outside the Vibes night club shortly before 3 a.m. on Aug. 22, when authorities say Hopkins got out of the car and shot Malik Pickett, 26, multiple times. The two then sped away from the shooting, with police in pursuit.
The suspect vehicle struck pedestrian Gary Traylor, 52, while running a red light at Western Avenue, then hit a utility pole. Both Ellis and Hopkins were hospitalized following the crash.
Ellis faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and criminal damage to property.
Hopkins also faces first-degree murder, battery and weapons charges. He has been ordered to remain in custody until his trial begins.
Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash and police pursuit.
