Two people are dead, another person is hurt, and two suspects are in the hospital after a shooting led to a car chase and crash overnight Saturday on Peoria's South Side.

One of the deceased victims was a pedestrian who was struck during the pursuit, and the Illinois State Police are investigating that part of the incident.

It's the second traffic-related death within a month connected to a Peoria Police Department action.

Peoria Police say officers were in the vicinity of the intersection of Jefferson and Howett around 2:45 a.m. and heard shots fired nearby. About the same time, a ShotSpotter alert indicated 20 rounds had been fired at the location.

Officers saw a vehicle driving away from the scene and pursued in an attempt to make a traffic stop.

Peoria Police said one man was shot multiple times at the initial scene and died shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

Another man who had been shot in the leg arrived at the hospital in a private vehicle. He is expected to recover.

State police said the fleeing car hit another vehicle while traveling west at the intersection of Howett Street and Western Avenue, then continued on and struck the pedestrian before crashing into a utility pole. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital. According to Peoria police, one of them is in critical condition and the other is in serious condition.

The Peoria County Coroner's Office has not yet identified the deceased victims.

Peoria Police's criminal investigations division, crime scene unit and patrol unit continue to investigate the initial homicide.

Peoria Police is asking anyone with information about the shooting to submit a tip by calling 1-309-673-4521, anonymously through the tip411 app or by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-309-673-9000. The Illinois State Police Zone 4 Investigations unit can be reached at 1-217-782-4750.
