After Peoria police arrested a 15-year-old boy Friday afternoon for a shooting that targeted the Manual High School building, Police Chief Eric Echevarria sought to reassure the community that the department is actively taking steps to keep schools safe.

“I want to stress that there was no way to predict this act. What made the difference was the quick response of our officers, who were already in the area,” Echevarria said in a statement issued Saturday afternoon. “Because of their vigilance, the suspect was arrested within minutes, and no students, staff, or officers were harmed.”

The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m., with officers reporting to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2400 block of West Wiswall Street. No victims were found, but Manual was placed on a temporary lockdown.

In his statement, Echevarria said the suspect had been suspended earlier in the day. He returned to school grounds with a firearm and took multiple shots at the building.

“Based on what we know, there is no indication that he was aiming at people, only at the structure,” said Echevarria.

The boy was apprehended shortly after the incident following a brief foot pursuit. Officers recovered the discarded firearm and other related evidence along the suspect’s path.

He was charged with multiple offenses, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and underage possession of a handgun. He was transported to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center, and the incident remains under investigation.

“I could not be prouder of the men and women of the Peoria Police Department for their swift actions, and I thank the school staff for working closely with us,” said Echevarria. “To the parents and families who waited anxiously while we secured the school, I understand your fear, and I thank you for your patience and trust.”

Friday’s shooting occurred two days after another shooting in the vicinity of Manual High that resulted in a 15-year-old girl suffering a graze wound.

The chief’s statement said the department is “fully committed” to protecting Peoria’s schools.

“I want everyone to know: your safety is our highest priority. We will continue to keep a strong police presence not only at Manual but throughout Peoria Public Schools,” said Echevarria. “We will continue working side by side with school administrators, teachers, and families to maintain safety, open communication, and trust.”
