Peoria gun violence ticks slightly higher in May

Through the first five months of 2026, Peoria has recorded four murders, three fatal shootings, and 20 gunfire incidents. That's one more of each than at this point a year ago.

Gun violence in Peoria increased slightly in May, with homicides and shooting incidents now all above last year’s pace.

Year-to-date figures released Tuesday by the Peoria Police Department show seven gunfire crimes last month, with one homicide and two self-inflicted shooting injuries.

The lone homicide was the downtown domestic violence shooting May 8 that resulted in police fatally shooting the assailant.

Through the first five months of 2026, Peoria has recorded four murders, three fatal shootings and 20 gunfire incidents. That's one more of each than at this point a year ago.

The city finished last year with 12 homicides, marking a decline in four consecutive years.
