Prosecutors say a failed robbery attempt is at the root of a Peoria teenager's murder

Fourteen-year-old Omarius Gates died this week in a failed stick-up attempt, Peoria County prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The incident happened Monday night at Richwoods and Molleck. Tramier Pate, 23, told police he stuck a gun in Gates' back and tried to rob the teenager of a gun he was carrying. Pate said his gun accidentally fired.

Gates' gun was actually a toy gun disguised to look authentic. The teenager died at the scene.

Pate is charged with first degree murder. He remains at the Peoria County Jail. His bond hearing is set for July 6.
