After suffering a heart attack earlier this month, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy is back at work to push his plan on reducing gun violence.
McCarthy told Illinois state senators why he thinks gun violence is high in Chicago.
"We have a real simple problem in Chicago. There’s too many guns coming in, and there’s too little punishment going out."
McCarthy says many guns used in crimes are coming from Illinois’ surrounding states. And he’s still pushing for stricter prison sentences for those convicted of gun crimes - even though the state legislature has rejected that idea.
An aide for Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Illinois could license gun shops, so law enforcement can check up on them.
But a lobbyist for the National Rifle Association says many gun shops already take precautions to prevent guns from ending up in the wrong hands.
