The Greater Peoria area's escalating COVID-19 figures continue to mirror the statewide surge in Illinois, with a single-day record for new cases.
Tri-County health officials reported 394 additional infections on Friday, including 256 in Tazewell County alone. Peoria County had 111 new cases and Woodford County added 27.
The region’s total case count since the start of the pandemic is now 12,173 – after an increase of 2,196 in the past week, or an average of 314 each day.
Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson has said that a daily average of 500 cases would make it difficult for contact tracers to keep up with demand, and the outbreak would be considered “uncontrolled” by public health standards.
“To really help our contact tracers and really control that number, it's exactly what we've been saying in terms of those non-pharmaceutical interventions: you’ve got to wear your masks and you have to maintain social distancing,” Hendrickson said during Thursday’s weekly media briefing.
The Peoria area’s most recent fatality is a Tazewell County man in his 80s who was not a resident of a long-term care facility. The Tri-County’s death toll stands at 182.
Area hospitals have 159 patients with COVID-19, including 31 in intensive care units.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported a single-day high of 15,415 confirmed and probable coronavirus infections, with a record one-day testing mark of more than 106,000.
