Community Mourns Death of Fulton County Deputy

The suspect in the slaying of a Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy was arrested Wednesday morning.

Illinois State Police Capt. Jon Dively said Nathan Woodring, 42, was taken into custody at 8:20 a.m. at his rural Avon residence without incident. Woodring is suspected in the shooting death of Deputy Troy Chisum yesterday.

"I stand before you today saddened and (at) a loss for adequate words to express the grief we are feeling at the loss of one of our own," said Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard. He was visibly emotional at a press conference held Wednesday in Avon.

Woodring was involved in an 18-hour standoff with multiple police departments following a reported battery and domestic incident. Chisum was shot while responding to the incident.

Woodring was taken to the McDonough County Jail for processing. The Illinois State Police is releasing no further details on the incident at this time and refused to take questions at a press conference Wednesday in Avon.

Fulton County property tax records indicate Woodring owned the home at 5250 E. Troy Rd. where the standoff took place.

Chisum's body was escorted to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria last night by law enforcement.

Peoria police officers, firefighters and other county agencies lined multiple overpasses with flashing vehicles along I-74 to pay respects as Chisum's body was transported by a string of emergency vehicles two miles long on the 40-mile trek to the Henry Lange Funeral Home in Lewistown on Wednesday afternoon.
