PEORIA -- One Peoria mom is calling on the community to come together in the wake of Wednesday’s shooting that led to the death of a 16-year-old male.

Allison Salinas is opening up her front yard as a gathering place to honor the lives of those lost to gun violence while also showing how the community can stand as one.

She said she hopes those who are involved in local gun violence choose to attend and will see the community they are destroying.

“I would rather have someone standing in my front yard with a candle speaking about prayer and hope and forgiveness than shooting somebody up," she said.

Salinas said a community that stands together presents a stronger front against violence.

The vigil begins at 8 p.m. tonight at the corner of Atlantic and Frye streets. Click here to find out more about tonight's event.
