A 17-year-old girl died early Thursday after the vehicle she was in was struck by another vehicle that fled from a traffic stop in Peoria’s East Bluff neighborhood.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the victim as Isis Horn. She was pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m. in an intensive care unit at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
According to the Peoria Police Department, a patrol officer pulled over the suspect vehicle at the intersection of Monroe Street and Abington Street shortly before 1:30 a.m. After the office made contact with the 18-year-old male driver, he sped from the scene.
About a minute later, officers arrived upon the two-vehicle crash about a mile away at the intersection of Maryland Street and McClure Avenue and confirmed that one of the vehicles was the one that fled the traffic stop.
According to the Peoria Fire Department, crews arrived to find two mid-sized cars with major damage. Horn had no pulse when she was pulled from the car she was in. First responders were informed one car was traveling at a high rate of speed on McClure when it struck the other vehicle on the passenger side.
Officers attempted life-saving measures on Horn and she was transported to the hospital, but she died of her injuries. The 18-year-old male driver of the vehicle she was in also was taken to OSF with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the crash on foot and remains at large. One occupant from the suspect vehicle was taken into police custody and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
