The alleged driver of a vehicle that fled a traffic stop in Peoria’s East Bluff neighborhood and was later involved in a collision with another vehicle that claimed the life of a teen passenger is now in custody at the Peoria County Jail.
A joint statement from Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos and Sheriff Chris Watkins said Shamarr Greenlee, 36, was arrested over the weekend in St. Louis and transported to Peoria County.
Greenlee is accused of driving away from Peoria Police after being pulled over shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Monroe and Abington. About a minute later, Greenlee’s car struck another vehicle about a mile away near the intersection of Maryland and McClure.
The crash resulted in the death of Isis Horn, 17, a passenger in the second vehicle. She was pronounced dead several hours later at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
An investigation led by Illinois State Police identified Greenlee as the driver of the suspect vehicle, said authorities. That investigation determined Peoria Police were not in pursuit of Greenlee’s car at the time of the collision after he fled the traffic stop.
Greenlee allegedly fled the crash scene on foot. Following his arrest in Missouri, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
The State’s Attorney’s Office has filed a petition to detain Greenlee until his trial. A hearing on that petition has not yet been scheduled.
