Area law enforcement are operating special “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” patrols this Labor Day.
Illinois State Police and local agencies are stepping up their efforts to take drunk and impaired drivers off the road on what’s considered the last weekend of summer.
State Police Trooper Ross Green says 23 people died on Illinois roadways last Labor Day weekend.
Green says they are ramping up patrols to prevent that from happening again.
“Motorists will see troopers conducting roadside safety checks and other directed patrols throughout the holiday weekend to prevent senseless tragedies from occurring," Green said.
State and local law enforcement agencies are teaming up with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The campaign runs from now through September 5th. It includes additional patrols and zero tolerance for seat belt violations.
Peoria and Tazewell County drivers can also expect to see additional roadside safety checks throughout September.
