Policing seat belts in the back

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is stepping-up enforcement on seat belt violations for all seating positions in a car. The Sheriff’s Department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and IDOT for this year’s Memorial Day Click it or Ticket Campaign.

Specifically the Sheriff’s office is targeting seatbelts for all passengers, including those in the back seat. The back seat seat belt law went into effect in 2012.

Last year IDOT conducted observation surveys and concluded the overall usage rate for rear seat occupants was 77 percent. Those in the front seat were wearing seat belts at a rate of more than 93 percent.

The Click it or Ticket Campaign begins Friday.
