IDOT set to close Cedar Street Bridge for monthslong repairs

Traffic is backed up on a bridge due to construction, with orange barrels blocking one lane. Cars wait at a traffic light. A red building and a “HUGE” billboard are visible near the road. Speed limit sign reads 45 mph.

A still capture Thursday afternoon from an Illinois Department of Transportation traffic camera shows vehicles at the intersection of Washington Street and MacArthur Highway in Peoria at the western base of the Cedar Street Bridge over the Illinois River.

Motorists in Greater Peoria will have one fewer roadway available for crossing the Illinois River for the next couple months, beginning next week.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will close the Cedar Street Bridge, carrying Illinois 8 and Illinois 116, between Washington Street in Peoria and Edmund Street in East Peoria starting Monday.

The closure is needed for joint replacement, deck patching and electrical work. The shutdown is expected to last until mid-to-late August.

A detour will be posted and drivers should expect delays in the area and allow extra time for their commutes. IDOT recommends avoiding the area if possible and considering alternate routes.

The other river crossings nearby include the Bob Michel Bridge [Illinois 40] and the Murray Baker Bridge [Interstate 74], along with the Shade-Lohmann Bridge [I-474] further south and the McClugage Bridge [U.S. 150] on the north end.
