A suspect has been arrested for first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing last week in Peoria’s West Bluff neighborhood.

According to the Peoria Police Department, 21-year-old Tavion Evans was taken into custody without incident Wednesday. Detectives previously had identified Evans as the suspect during their investigation into the death of Zachary White, 35.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of N. Underhill Street shortly before 10:30 p.m. last Thursday, finding White lying injured on the floor of a residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene, making it the first homicide of the year in Peoria.

Police say they located Evans in the back of a residence in the 2100 block of W. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

He was brought to police headquarters for questioning, and subsequently arrested for the murder and three other active warrants. He remains in custody at Peoria County Jail.
