Suspect in Bradley University shooting granted pretrial release

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

A 19-year-old man charged in connection with a weekend shooting on the Bradley University campus will remain free with conditions until his trial begins.

Edward Traywick Jr. of Lansing faces charges of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm in the early Sunday morning incident.

According to a media release from the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, associate judge Mark Gilles on Tuesday denied prosecutors’ petition for pretrial detention, citing Traywick’s gainful employment and lack of a criminal history. He was released with electronic monitoring and ordered not to possess dangerous weapons.

Traywick is accused of shooting an 18-year-old woman inside Geisert Hall. The suspect and the victim are not Bradley University students.

Peoria police reported to the dorm around 2:15 a.m. Sunday and learned the woman suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen; she was being taken to a local hospital in a private vehicle.

Officers stopped the vehicle on the way and found the victim and Traywick. During the traffic stop, police found a backpack belonging to Traywick that contained a loaded handgun.

The woman identified Traywick as the shooter and said the shooting was accidental.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Peoria Police Department.
