Pekin police arrested a 93-year-old man on a charge of first-degree murder Tuesday in connection with the stabbing death of a female victim.

A news release from Pekin Police Chief Seth Ranney says charges against James Pate have been turned over to the Tazewell County State’s Attorney’s Office for prosecution. He was booked into the Tazewell County Jail around 2:45 p.m.

Ranney said officers and medical personnel responded to the 1800 block of South 14th Street around 10:30 a.m. They discovered the victim and attempted life-saving measures. She was transported to a Peoria hospital and later died from her injuries.

The victim’s identity, age and cause of death have not yet been released by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.

An immediate investigation led to the arrest of Pate. The Illinois State Police assisted in processing the crime scene. The time of the attack was not released and no other additional information has been provided.
