A 15-year-old boy is in custody at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center, charged with having a loaded handgun in his backpack at Manual High School.

The Peoria Police Department said officers were called to the school in the 800 block of Griswold Street shortly before 11 a.m. The school was immediately placed on lockdown while school resource officers detained the student.

Peoria Public Schools Director of Communications Marjorie Kauth said the lockdown at Manual lasted 40 minutes. She said a tip alerted resource officers to the weapon’s presence.

Police said they found the stolen handgun while searching the student’s backpack. The weapon was not fired and no one was injured.

The teen was subsequently arrested on several charges, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm under age 21, and disorderly conduct.
