A 33-year-old man died Friday after the vehicle he was driving went off the roadway and struck a tree west of Chillicothe.

According to a social media post by the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 2 p.m. to the single-vehicle crash in the 4100 block of Cloverdale Road.

The vehicle was traveling west when it appears to have lost control, with the sheriff’s office indicating speed likely was a factor.

The driver, who was the only occupant, was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, but did not survive.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the man was Matthew Burke, 33, of Chillicothe. He suffered multiple blunt force trauma injuries that were inconsistent with life. Toxicology testing is pending.
