Police are investigating after shots were fired Wednesday morning near the Peoria County Courthouse Downtown.
Sheriff Chris Watkins said deputies from his office and Peoria Police responded to the report of gunfire and determined shots were fired in the roadway on Hamilton Street, near the Jefferson Street intersection.
A vehicle fled the area immediately after the incident. It’s unclear whether or not anyone was struck by the gunfire.
Watkins said the courthouse was placed on a brief lockdown with no one allowed in or out until the situation was considered safe. He said Peoria Police are leading the investigation, with assistance from his office.
The Peoria Police Department has not released any additional information as of 5:30 p.m.
