One person was hospitalized Saturday after an early morning residential fire in Peoria.

According to a news release from the Peoria Fire Department, crews responded to 802 W. Maywood Ave., shortly after 3 a.m.

On arrival, firefighters encountered a working fire with smoke coming from the front of the residence. They learned the home’s sole occupant evacuated the building before they arrived.

After the fire was extinguished, an investigator determined the cause to be accidental.

The resident was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation and burns. The injuries are not considered life-threatening. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

Damage to the residence and contents is estimated at $40,000. A crew was called to board up the house.
