While hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the Peoria area fell for a third straight day Thursday, the Tri-County region has seen vaccination rates slow significantly.

Peoria, Tazewell, and Woodford counties combined to administer 8,541 vaccine doses over the past seven days — down from a high of 21,083 injections from April 8-14.

Updated figures from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) show the Tri-County adding 1,495 shots and 1,009 fully vaccinated individuals in the past day. The area has averaged 1,218 injections per day over the past week.

According to the IDPH data, the Tri-County has administered 254,187 total shots and 33.8% of the region’s population is fully vaccinated.

Peoria-area hospitals currently have 115 patients with COVID-19, a decline of 18 since Wednesday — the lowest number since 74 on April 1. Currently, 29 individuals are being treated in intensive care units, while 887 area residents infected with the coronavirus are isolating at home.

Tri-County health officials reported 119 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, and one additional fatality: a Peoria County woman in her 70s. The region's death toll since the start of the pandemic stands at 677, while the case count is up to 44,365.

The IDPH reported 1,778 new coronavirus infections and 40 more deaths statewide, bringing Illinois to 1,348,176 cases and 22,136 lives lost. The state has administered 9.41 million COVID-19 vaccine doses and 4.12 million residents are fully vaccinated, which represents 32.33% of the population.
