U.S. Senate candidate supports decision to fire Chicago police superintendent

Facebook

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Andrea Zopp says she supports Chicago's mayor's decision to fire its police superintendent.

Zopp was speaking to students at the University of Illinois at the same time Rahm Emanuel announced the ouster of Garry McCarthy.  The police leader's exit is exactly one week after video was released of the shooting of Laquan McDonald, a Chicago teen shot 16 times by a Chicago police officer last fall.

Zopp, who worked on similar cases in the Cook County State's Attorney's office, says this was a long time coming.

"I think his leadership had definitely come into question and so I think his resigning is a step on the pathway to driving--making the change we need to make."

Zopp spoke with U of I students at length about race relations and police brutality in the U.S. and says as a U.S. Senator, she'd do anything in her power to make investigations like these more transparent.

Zopp's primary opponent, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, also called for the resignation of Superintendent McCarthy.
