BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - McLean County residents and businesses dumped much more garbage in 2014 over a year earlier - waste that goes to a landfill that could be full in fewer than two years. Ecology Action Center reports garbage collection increased 16 percent in 2014, to 226,000 tons.
Executive Director Michael Brown says at the current pace, county officials will have to find an alternative to the McLean County Landfill before June 2017. Brown says consumers should be more conscious of the packaging of goods they buy. He encourages shopping for products in recyclable packages and seeking reusable instead of disposable items. Recycling stayed strong in 2014. Recyclables climbed from 74,000 tons to 85,000 tons - a 38 percent increase.
