A $10 million federal grant will help fund a new maintenance facility for CityLink.
With the grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Authority, the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District has secured $20 million toward the project’s estimated $30 million cost.
“This has been an ongoing project for us the past two years that is long overdue for our transit agency,” City Link General Manager Doug Roelfs said in a news release. “The rebuild and renovation of our facilities will greatly improve the safety, compliance and overall efficiency for our fleet of buses.”
The current maintenance building was built in 1978 and is the oldest one in the state, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The new grant comes from the FTA’s infrastructure investment program aimed at updating bus-related facilities.
In a news release, U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, R-Peoria, said the resources “will spur economic growth and connect Peorians to their destinations.”
CityLink said it is exploring opportunities for the remaining funding. Design work for the project is in progress and construction could begin as soon as next spring.
