Driver Not Intoxicated When Rig Crashed Into School Bus

WGLT

The driver whose semi-truck collided with a school bus on Interstate 74 last month was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says toxicology results show 34-year-old Ryan E. Hute only had caffeine in his system when the December 5 crash occurred.

The Delmar, Iowa, man died when the truck he was driving crashed head-on with a bus carrying the members of the Normal West girls basketball team.

Authorities say Hute was driving on the wrong side of the road when the vehicles collided.

Harwood ruled Hute’s death an accident based on the toxicology results.

Normal West team volunteer Charlie Crabtree also died in the crash. The school bus driver and a coach were injured, but none of the student athletes suffered serious injuries.

The incident happened on Interstate 74 near Downs as the basketball team was returning from a game in Champaign-Urbana.
