Illinois police agencies are warning they will be out in force this Super Bowl weekend to catch drunken drivers.
18 people were killed in road accidents on Super Bowl Sun in the last five years. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, half of those deaths were in accidents involving a driver who had been drinking.
The department is urging football fans to plan ahead and make sure they have a designated driver if they expect to be drinking alcohol.
The Illinois State Police and more than 100 local police departments and sheriff's offices will be patrolling the roadways. That includes Peoria Police.
Authorities are also reminding those hosting parties they can be held liable and prosecuted if someone they served alcohol ends up in a drunken-driving crash.
