Peoria police warn of IRS scam

Peoria police says some scammers are taking advantage of tax season to con money out of area victims. The police department is warning residents of a new phone scam where callers are claiming to be with the IRS or U.S. Department of Treasury.

The callers demand payment for taxes and make threats of arrest, deportation, or suspension of driver’s licenses to those who refuse. Additional scammers may call the victims as well pretending to be with local police or the DMV to support the IRS claim.

Police say anyone receiving these calls should call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 with any questions or the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.

Police say those receiving these calls should also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov and link to, "FTC Complaint Assistant."
