The Peoria County Coroner has identified the man shot and killed at a Peoria gas station on Thursday.

Coroner Jamie Harwood said Marnelius Alexander, 23, of Peoria, was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. The coroner said Alexander died of a gunshot wound to the chest and died instantly.

Alexander is the second person in Peoria to die by homicide in 2026, and the first killed by gunfire.

Peoria Police said officers were called to the 1000 block of Western Avenue on the city’s South Side shortly before 11 p.m. for a report of gunfire.

Officers found one man who had been fatally shot, later identified as Alexander, and a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg outside an auto parts store a block away. Police said his injuries are not considered life threatening.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Harwood said the case remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Department.
