A 23-year-old man is dead after a shooting incident Wednesday night near a gas station on Peoria’s South Side.

The Peoria Police Department said officers responded to the business in the 1000 block of Western Avenue following a ShotSpotter alert shortly before 11 p.m. On the way, officers learned two people had been shot.

Upon arrival, police found the deceased victim in the gas station parking lot with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the man was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m.

The man’s death marks Peoria’s second homicide and first fatal shooting of 2026.

The second individual, a 19-year-old man, was found outside an auto parts business one block away, with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to a local hospital and his injury is not considered life threatening.

Harwood has not yet released the identity of the deceased victim. He said an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information potentially related to the case is asked to contact Peoria Police.
