Peoria man handed 99-year sentence for killing his girlfriend

A Peoria man convicted of killing his girlfriend at a Peoria apartment complex last year was sentenced Friday to a total of 99 years in prison.

Derreck S. Hall, 46, was found guilty in January of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the January 2025 shooting death of Latrista Warfield, 37, at the Grove Apartments in the 1400 block of West Candlelight Court.

Peoria County Judge Steve Kouri sentenced Hall to 85 years on the murder charge, and another 14 years for the weapon possession, served consecutively. Hall is eligible for day-for-day credit only on the weapons charge.

During Friday’s hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Alferink sought a lengthy sentence and described the crime as a brutal murder. A member of Warfield’s family told the court that Hall had an opportunity to say goodbye to his relatives, but they never got that same chance.

During his two-day bench trial, Hall admitted to killing Warfield but claimed he was provoked. Kouri found that the facts did not support that claim and his actions proved otherwise.

Evidence showed Warfield was shot five times, including twice in the back, and Hall did not call for help after the shooting. Instead he left the scene, changed clothes and hid the weapon. He did not contact police until more than 12 hours later, when he called to turn himself in.
