The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is getting 45 new automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, thanks to a grant of nearly $53,000 from the Gary Sinise Foundation.
The stock replaces aging devices in the department’s patrol vehicles that have outlasted their useable expectancy and otherwise would require major upgrades.
“These AEDs save lives,” Sheriff Chris Watkins said in a news release. “This grant ensures our deputies have the most reliable, modern equipment available when seconds matter.”
Watkins said the new AEDs will improve reliability and accuracy, comply with the latest medical and safety standards, and enhance deputies’ ability to respond to cardiac emergencies.
The First Responder Grant through the Gary Sinise Foundation covers the entire cost of the new AEDs, avoiding any need to use county taxpayer funds. Without the grant, the full purchase price would’ve required multiple budget cycles, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
“These AEDs are used on people of every background, in every part of our county,” said Watkins. “This upgrade strengthens our ability to serve the public equitably and effectively.”
Established by its namesake Illinois-born actor, the Gary Sinise Foundation provides support for law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies nationwide through its First Responder Outreach program.
