The principal of an elementary school on Peoria’s South Side is among seven Illinois finalists for the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Leadership award.

Fabian Daniels has worked at the Annie Jo Gordon Community Learning Center for 25 years, serving as principal since 2013.

The recognition highlights Daniels’ dedication to fostering academic success, innovation, and community engagement.

“Being the Pride of the South Side is truly an honor for me, especially as a proud product of Peoria Public Schools,” Daniels said in a media release. “My educational foundation began at Harrison — now Annie Jo Gordon — so this moment feels full circle.

“It is living proof that greatness, resilience, and success are rooted right here in 61605. With hard work and opportunity, extraordinary leaders rise from our community.”

As principal, Daniels has worked to foster an environment of unity by strengthening family and student engagement within the community. She has helped the school reduce chronic absenteeism, leading to increased student engagement.

Under her guidance, Annie Jo Gordon has earned a “commendable” status on the Illinois State Report Card for two consecutive years, reflecting the school’s success in ensuring there are no underperforming student groups and achieving a graduation rate above 67%.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment of our entire school community,” she said. “Together, we continue to prove that every child can soar to new heights when given the opportunity, support, and belief they deserve.”

The Golden Apple Awards honor outstanding school leaders who have made a significant impact on their school communities by creating positive learning environments and driving student achievement.

Recipients receive a cash award of $10,000, with $5,000 for the school leader and $5,000 going to the school for a project of the recipient’s choosing. Winners will be announced later this year.
