A Peoria man found guilty of first-degree murder in a 2021 fatal shooting on the city’s south side was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years in prison.

Marvin Alexander was convicted by a Peoria County jury in October for causing the death of De’Monyae Phillips, 19. Prosecutors said Alexander shot Phelps three times in the chest during a dispute over $70.

Alexander faced a minimum term of 45 years and a maximum of life in prison. Prosecutors sought a sentence at the higher end of the range, but Judge Steve Kouri imposed the 50-year term.

Alexander will be required to serve the entire 50-year sentence.
