One person was found dead inside a garage that caught fire on Wednesday morning in Peoria.

According to a news release from the Peoria Fire Department, crews were called to the fire in an alley in the 1200 block of NE Perry Ave. in the North Valley neighborhood at 8:16 a.m.

Fire crews said they found one deceased male inside the garage.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the victim has not yet been identified.

“We will be working with the Peoria Police Department, starting with fingerprinting to see if we can get an identification positively,” Harwood said. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Battalion chief Larry Carter said the fire was under control in about 10 minutes and crews remained on scene for about two hours checking for hot spots and investigating the cause with the help of two arson dogs.

Contents of the one-stall garage were a total loss, causing about $30,000 in property damage, according to Carter.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
