The Peoria Fire Department says a blaze that caused an estimated $100,000 in damages to a Bradley University fraternity house Saturday was set intentionally.
Crews responded to the Sigma Nu house at 1300 W. Fredonia Avenue shortly before 10 a.m., according to a department news release.
A statement provided by Bradley University attributed the cause of the blaze to residents losing control of an outdoor fire.
“The Peoria Fire Department responded quickly and it was put out without incident. There were no injuries, and damages are still being assessed. We want to thank the Peoria Fire Department for their professionalism and quick response,” the statement read.
The fire department said the first unit on the scene discovered smoke showing from the roof of the two-story building. Firefighters brought hose lines to the second floor and roof, managing to bring the fire under control quickly.
A search confirmed there were no occupants trapped inside. An arson investigator called to the scene determined the fire had been set intentionally.
Bradley spokesperson Libby Derry said the university is working with the 16 students who live at the house, and have provided them temporary housing until inspections are complete.
Attempts to contact fraternity representatives did not receive an immediate response.
