A 22-year-old Peoria man hospitalized after being shot on the city’s South Side over the weekend has died, and three teens arrested in the crime are facing first-degree murder charges.

The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office said Wednesday the two 16-year-old boys and one 17-year-old are automatically charged as adults because of the nature of the offense.

According to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood, Khmari Rickmon was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Harwood said autopsy results indicate Rickmon died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The teens arrested in connection with Rickmon’s shooting were initially charged with multiple weapons violations. Prosecutors elevated the charges after Rickmon’s death, and filed petitions to keep the three in custody until trial.

The incident happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the 2300 block of West Antoinette Street. Peoria Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert of 15 rounds fired and found Rickmon lying on the ground.

Officers were told Rickmon was shot in the head while riding a bicycle. While executing a search warrant at a residence on the block, police found multiple firearms, including one that was reported stolen.

One 17-year-old boy and two 16-year-olds were taken into custody and later transported to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Peoria Police.
