Construction of East Peoria’s new $21.6 million police department building is on schedule to finish next summer.
“They’re making great progress; we’ve lucked out with the weather and everything else. I think July is the target,” Mayor John Kahl said during Tuesday’s city council meeting.
The council took a step toward equipping the station by unanimously voting to spend $43,000 on gym equipment from Pure Fitness Innovations, with payments to be made in three installments.
“We got a heck of a deal. This is actually coming from a Division I, pretty top-notch college that renovated their fitness center, and we landed a good deal on this equipment that’s currently in storage,” said Kahl.
“Normally, it would probably be about three times that cost.”
With 41,000 square feet of functional space, the new two-story station on Camp Street represents a major upgrade from the current police facility.
The council also approved an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation that prohibits parking on designated state and federal routes, notably where improvement projects are underway on the Cedar Street Extension Bridge and along Illinois 116.
East Peoria already did not allow parking in either corridor, but it was not expressly prohibited in the city code.
Among items approved as part of the consent agenda was the second reading final authorization of a $500,000 loan to The Putt Club through the city’s revolving loan fund.
