John Kahl will run for a third four-year term as the mayor of East Peoria.
Kahl announced his bid for reelection in next spring’s election in a social media post Monday morning, saying that holding the office “has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
He says the city has accomplished a lot by taking a “common sense approach” and working collaboratively during his seven years of leadership.
“Real leadership is being committed to the job, working hard and delivering results. There is more work ahead of us,” he said.

Kahl was first elected mayor in 2019 after Dave Mingus chose not to seek a fourth term. He ran unopposed in his first reelection bid, and as of yet no other candidates have announced plans to challenge him in the spring.
Since taking office, Kahl has served in a full-time capacity while handling all executive duties since the East Peoria does not employ a city administrator. Earlier this month, the city council approved a salary increase to a base of $128,700 annually for the dual position. Kahl abstained from that vote.
In his announcement, Kahl pointed to “strength and resilience” during the COVID-19 pandemic, touted “historic investments” in infrastructure, and public safety improvements.
“We brought smart economic development, supported all members of our thriving and diverse business community and expanded opportunities for our families,” he said. “And since day one, we have kept our community safe.”
