A 30-year-old Peoria man died Thursday after the SUV he was driving was struck in an accident with a truck-tractor on Interstate 74 in East Peoria.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood identified the victim as Dominique Stringer. He was pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center after being transported from the crash scene.
Illinois State Police say the collision happened shortly before 8 a.m. near the Main Street exit and involved a passenger vehicle and a truck-tractor.
In a post on social media, Harwood said witnesses indicated the truck was traveling westbound on the interstate when two rear tires broke off the rims. The tires initially hit a concrete barrier before bouncing into the eastbound lanes and striking the windshield of Stringer’s vehicle.
The heavily damaged SUV then traveled off the Main Street exit ramp and struck a retaining wall. Harwood said Stringer died instantly from his injuries.
Toxicology test results required by state statute are pending and the incident remains under investigation.
The Main Street ramp was closed for approximately 3½ hours.
