FILE: The exterior of the Sunnyland branch of the Washington District Library is one of the 22 spaces currently filled in the Washington Plaza Shopping Center.

A large shopping center near Washington's busy east-west commercial corridor is up for auction.

The Washington Plaza Shopping Center, also known as Sunnyland Plaza, is located just off Washington Road, or Route 8 shortly before it becomes Business Route 24.

The plaza is home to businesses like an AMC Theater, Papa John's, a local childcare center, Dollar General and a Washington District Library branch.

The auction, held through the Peoria-based Joseph and Camper Commercial and the auction platform Ten X, started Monday and runs through Wednesday.

Joseph and Camper’s auction listing states the 22-unit retail space is currently 70% leased, and claims the national chains present at the plaza and in the surrounding Washington community ensure consistent foot traffic for potential investors. The listing also highlights the plaza’s location in an enterprise zone and Tax Increment Financing district.

The listing notes the plaza was 90% leased before the start of the COVID pandemic, but describes the shopping center's current status as "stabilized."

The 12-acre area on auction also includes two lots for potential future development: a 4,500-square-foot tract along Washington Road and 30,000-square-foot lot along the plaza’s Summit Road side.

The 98,879-square-foot shopping center was originally built in 1970.

The auction opened at a starting bid of $625,000.
