Peoria teen charged with murder as an adult in father’s shooting death

A 16-year-old Peoria boy will face first-degree murder charges in adult felony court for the fatal shooting of his father.

The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office announced the charge against Tykvier Drummond on Thursday, adding the teen’s age and the severity of the crime resulted in an automatic transfer to adult court.

Prosecutors allege Drummond shot his father, 34-year-old Michael Drummond, multiple times outside a residence in the 2400 block of W. Howett Street in South Peoria on Monday night.

Peoria police responded to the scene shortly after 9 p.m., following Shot Spotter alerts for 13 rounds fired. They found the elder Drummond lying face down with apparent gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital, although Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said he likely died instantly.

According to prosecutors, a witness said Michael Drummond was driving away from the house where the teen stayed with his mother when Tykvier fired at the vehicle. The father stopped the car and got out, and the son fired additional shots before fleeing the scene.

Peoria police located the teen Tuesday and he was arrested following an interview. He remains in custody at the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center ahead of a Friday court hearing on the state’s pretrial detention petition.
