Two men were arrested after allegedly causing a train to derail Monday afternoon.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Department says Caleb Finley, 18, and Jimmy Johnson, 20, both of Bartonville, were arrested for criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, reckless conduct and placing an object on railroad tracks.

Police say Finley and Johnson were seen near a “derailing device” shortly after a Union Pacific Locomotive left the tracks around 3 p.m. in the 100 block of Sanitation Road outside of Bartonville. They believe the men moved the device from its spot on the rails and watched the train pass over it.

No one was injured in the derailment, but officials say the total cost of damage to the train wheels and tracks, as well as the labor to get the train back on the tracks, is more than $80,000.

Finley and Johnson were booked at the Peoria County Jail.
