Bartonville men sentenced for train derailment

A gavel rests on a judge's bench in a blurry courtroom. The text "WCBU Courts" sits on top of that photo.

Two Bartonville men have been sentenced in Peoria County Circuit Court for derailing a train late last year.

Caleb Finley, 18, and Jimmy Johnson, 20, pleaded guilty last week on charges of damage to railroad property, a Class 4 felony. Both men took plea deals, accepting a sentence of 30 months probation and 100 hours of community service performed within the next year.

Peoria County court records show both men also paid $1,075 in fees.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office said Finley and Johnson were seen near a “derailing device” shortly after a Union Pacific locomotive left the tracks outside of Bartonville on Nov. 18, 2024.

The estimated cost of the derailing totaled more than $80,000.

Before pleading guilty, Finley and Johnson were scheduled for a trial early next week.
